THE VICE PRESIDENT OF UGANDA PROF. GILBERT BUKENYA

To be the change you want to see in the world, you don't have to be loud but however, you have to be committed at being the inspiration to the people so that they can even change themselves.

Knowing the roots of the Vice President of Uganda gives you a true picture to show that change and prosperity in life is possible no matter the situation you are in now.

His Excellency the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya, is a distinguished scholar and Doctor of Medicine, and an outstanding leader of solid grounding but his beginning would by no means predict his future as his is now.

Born in the village of Lwantama in Kakiri – Wakiso District Prof. Bukenya went against the odds stacked against him as a child in humble circumstances, to join the Makerere University Medical School in 1971.

His mother struggled to have his son attain education in better schools by brewing alcohol and he therefore had his early education at St. Savio Primary School, Kisubi, St. Mary's College, Kisubi and St. Edward Secondary School, Bukumi.

After accomplishing his medicinal degree in Uganda , Prof Bukenya joined the prestigious Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene in London and was awarded a postgraduate Diploma in Public Health.

Determined to pursue his career, Prof Bukenya went straight on to the Ross Institute, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and obtained a Masters of Science in Community Health(Infectious disease Epidemiology).

There, he scored even higher successes for himself and Uganda , earning a mark of distinction for best performance in the MSC Programme at the University of London .

Eager to serve back home, Prof. Bukenya returned to Uganda in 1983 to lecture at the Institute of Public Health at Makerere University , but was poached a year later to lecture at the Department of Community Medicine, University of Papua New Guinea .

Within three years, the professor was appointed Head of Department at University of Papual New Guinea where he remained for 6 years.
During the same time, he accomplished his Doctorate of Philosphy in Public Health at the University of Queensland.

He returned to Uganda in 1991 and took on the mantle of Director of the Insitute of Public Health at Makerere University.

In 1993, Prof. Bukenya became Associate Professor at the Institute, and then was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Makerere University in 1995.

The leader in Prof. Bukenya has been unmistakable over the years. From 1985 to 1991, he was Chairman of the National Advisory Committee on Environmental Health and Maternal and Child Health, in the Government of Papua New Guinea.

In July 1996, Prof. Bukenya responded to the call of the people in the constituency in which he was born and brought up, and offered himself as their representative to parliament. To this day, he has held their love and support, and the Busiro North seat.

During his tenure of service as an honorable MP, Prof. Bukenya emerged as Chairman of the Movement Caucus in the House, Minister of State for Trade, and Minister in charge of the Presidency in the Government of Uganda.

Having accomplished his charges to the satisfaction of the people and President of the Republic of Uganda, Prof. Bukenya was on 23 May 2003 appointed Vice President.

From his humble beginning to prosperity, Prof. Bukenya decided to be a true change agent for the people of Uganda and Africa as a continent and from his there he decided to take on the leadership role on tremendous social, political and health issues that the continent is facing.

Prof. Bukenya has taken a leadership role in strengthening international relations, promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation, raising awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa, and creating poverty eradication measures in Uganda.

In 2005, his work on HIV/AIDS was recognized and awarded a honorary doctor of Science (DSc) by Case Western Reserve University , Cleveland Ohio .

While some African leaders been reluctant to admit to the growing problem of HIV/AIDS that plague their populations, Prof. Bukenya has taken a proactive stance. Since the early 1990s, he has partnered with various organizations, including the United Nations, to confront the epidemic in Uganda . As a direct result of his efforts, there has been a drastic decrease in the rate of new HIV/AIDS infections in Uganda

In 2007, Prof. Bukenya received the prestigious US Congressional Gold Medal Award for his poverty alleviation program the Prosperity for all which specifically targets peasant farmers.

From Prof. Bukenya's journey, it's clear that when you walk through a storm, you have to hold your head up high and you don't have to be afraid of the dark as at the end of the storm there is a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark if you walk on with hope in your heart you will never fail.

Hence Prosperity for All is possible for all Households in Uganda.

If you think there's something wrong with the world, it's your job to fix it. It's not someone else's responsibility. If you think the world can be made better, go do it. Love is seeing other people's needs and meeting them.
